Why is darkness so attractive?

Why do people wander off into the cave of darkness even if they know not what lies inside?

even though they know not if they will come back, at all.

Despite this, people willingly or unwillingly enter the cave of darkness. Its attraction is undeniable. What is dark makes us excited. What is dark makes us sweat, but also curious. Call it the inquisitive nature of man, but there is something extremely thrilling about the dark.

If you look at human history, it isn't so obvious that human beings are really that good. Why would a man torture another, so artfully, if there wasn't any thrill in it? Nothing satiates a beast more than a delectable kill. And it isn't self-evident that human beings are that different from beasts.

Whatever reasons human beings come up with, war cannot be justified. But we wage wars anyway. The deeper you understand a human soul, the more you realise its thirst to engage in something devious. When the trees get bigger, so do the shadows.

When you wander into the cave knowing not what you will find, beware of the shadows. Those aren't the shadows you can see but can only be felt creeping on you. That crippling sensation induced by the dark. Maybe it would be emptiness, for some it would be loneliness, others would despair at the sight of what is truly dark. Who knows what you will find, but beware of the shadows.

Journey to the underworld is a journey from which you cannot return, in the same form that is. The man that you will see in the mirror will not be the man that you once knew. But perhaps that is for the best, maybe there is some utility in knowing the darkness that is inside of you. The darkness that you seek has always been there within.

How would a man confront darkness if he does not acknowledge its existence?

How would a man clean the sewers if he is disgusted by the smell of what is unpleasant?

A man is not a rabbit and knowing this would be to his advantage.

But be careful.

"He who fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
