Every day we wake up and we either work in accordance with our goals or we work against them. The actions we take every day end up deciding the course of our life, as much as we would like to believe that a single big dramatic event is what decides it.

As much as it is important to do the things we are supposed to do, there are also things that we should not do, things that we are not supposed to do and when we do them we feel horrible about ourselves. Feelings of disgust and shame are commonly experienced when we do things that make us hate ourselves.

And the reason for that is

You have a nature, you have an intrinsic value system that acts as a compass for deciding how you feel about the world and depending on how you feel about things, you interact with them in a certain way.

People are generally more compelled to do things that they find interesting and meaningful as much as they have a repulsive reaction towards things that they find disgusting. If you understand yourself to some extent then you may know this already. If you don't then sit down and note down on a piece of paper these three things.

1) Things that you love to do

2) Things that you can stand

3) Things that you hate to do

There are actions that you take every day that make you hate yourself and if you stopped doing them much of your misery would go away. List all the things you are doing wrong and that you know are wrong for you.

If you think you are a lazy piece of shit and you hate yourself for that then stop doing that!

If you think you sleep late at night and you wake up in the morning late because of that and that ruins your day then stop doing that!

If you think jerking off to porn makes you feel like shit then stop doing that!

You know more than anyone the things you're doing wrong that you could fix. If you were honest with yourself of course.

Predictable argument: Why should I do that? changing things is hard and life isn't that bad anyway right now and I don't feel that bad about it so why go through the trouble of making a tiny improvement in my life which isn't even gonna make a difference?

So why should you do that?

For dignity, for self-respect. When you obey your own rules you have respect for yourself. When you do the things that you are supposed to do and choose to not do the things that are not good for you, you feel good about yourself. If you have been low enough in your life you wouldn't ever make an argument that it doesn't matter if you respect yourself or not.

As for the trivial difference you say it could make, it's not trivial. Anything that you do every day is a substantial portion of your life. These are the things that make a big difference. You may feel only a little bad about it but keep doing those things for a long time and the feelings of disgust in relation to yourself only exponentiate. It's a downward spiral.

But the good news is that there is such a thing as an upward spiral. Small improvements no matter how trivial, over an extensive period of time turn into gigantic wins. As you start to grow, the world becomes more pleasant and you become less resentful. Suddenly the neighbour doesn't seem so annoying anymore, suddenly the cat that's playing with the stick looks kinda adorable. You have more compassion for people not doing well and patience for people trying desperately to improve themselves.

Remember this, every action you take is either a chip-in for the person you want to become or the person you would never want to become.

Be careful where you choose to put your chips.

"Do not do things that would make you hate yourself"

See Ya!
