100,000 Years Ago...

There was a human named...let's say Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh was a normal human being just like us.

Gilgamesh would take a shit first thing in the morning.

Swing around the branches of the tree making weird noises.

Poke his hairy friends ass with a stick that he found lying on the floor.

But there was something special about Gilgamesh...

He had mastered the most important type of communication.

Now Gilgamesh did not really have the gift of language because language was not developed yet.

But despite that, Gilgamesh had no problems thriving in his tribe.

Why?

Because Gilgamesh had mastered the art of Non Verbal Communication.

You see...

Gilgamesh was an absolute chad...

He realised that most of human communication is non verbal.

💡
Fun Fact: Here's a breakdown of most human communication: 55% body language, 38% tone of voice and only 7% words. (Look up the Mehrabian Experiments)

For 95% of human history, we didn't have language. Zero words. Nada.

But somehow our ancestors managed to:

  • Form complex friendships and alliances
  • Warn each other about Tiger in the bushes
  • Fall in love
  • Build trust
  • Detect lies
  • Survive in a world trying to kill them 24/7

Their lives depended upon their skill to understand non verbals.

If they interpreted a non verbal signal wrong at time of danger, they would be dead.

(Of course they're all dead now anyway, but that's besides the point.)

There are some great books on non verbals and the 2 I've learned the most from are...

The Laws of Human Nature - Robert Greene

What Every Body is Saying - Joe Navarro

But the best and by far the most effective way you can learn and understand non verbal communication is by practising and observing in real life.

Here are some keys to become better at observing non verbals:

1) Watch for Contradictions: Watch for discrepancies between the words and tone of voice or the body language. People continually leak out their true feelings in gestures, tones of voice, facial expressions, and posture they cannot completely control. When in doubt, always trust the body and the tone over the words.

2) Study Baselines: Watch how someone normally behaves before trying to read changes. Look for deviations from their normal patterns. Navarro emphasises observing the same person in different settings to understand their behavioural range

3) Trust your gut: That weird feeling you get around certain people? That nervousness or excitement that you get when you see people you like is also your gut. That's millions of years of evolution trying to save your ass. Listen to it.

(I'll have to make a separate blog about The Gut because I can't possibly cover everything in this one, its so important that it deserves a blog of its own. Maybe my next one)

4) Put Your Phone Down: Seriously, this is the numero uno reason behind the lack of non verbal mastery. Immerse yourself in the real world and observe. If you don't use use your mirror neurons, they will get dull or maybe you haven't even used them at all yet.

Read these 2 books that I mentioned, don't be lazy guys. They are a goldmine of non verbal communication knowledge.

In this day and age...

Where most people don't even know that they lack these skills or most people don't even know what non verbal is...

You can make your life so much easier when you start understanding non verbals.

A whole new world will open itself to you, a world that is invisible to most.

I want you to treat this like your life depends on it, because it does.

Just don't be weird about it.

If I see one of you guys behind bars and blaming this blog for anything...I'll haunt you till the rest of your miserable days or not (I can't be bothered haha)

Alright thats it for today.

See ya next time

Peace out
